Air Pistol

Air Pistol is regarded as ideal training for all levels of target shooting, as well as being a serious Olympic event in its own right and was first introduced to the world stage at the 1970 world championships.

As there is almost no recoil when fired, the shooter can concentrate on aligning the sights and holding a steady sight picture on the target while squeezing the trigger. Competed by men and women the Air Pistol match is a precision shooting competition consisting of 60 shots on a 10 metre range to be completed within a 105 minute time frame. Most Air Pistol ranges are held indoors. The target card is of a uniform size with the international standard being 170mm x 170mm square. 10-ring, (Centre Black Circle) is 11.5mm. The more modern/larger club ranges generally have an electronic target winding system where each competitor can wind their target back for scoring and replace it while the match proceeds. However as SGPC is a small club our system remains one of manual control on all ranges.

There are several different types of Air Pistols with unique operating systems that can be used in an Air Pistol Match; These systems are referred to as spring and piston, pneumatic and gas powered. While there are still some enthusiasts using the spring and piston type pistols the most popular configuration used today is the compressed air types that utilise refillable cylinders specifically designed for this discipline.. All good quality target Air Pistols have adjustable grips, sights and triggers, and are incredibly well designed and engineered  pistols that leave the shooter with very little to no doubt with who is at fault if their scores are down.
